How to wear this season’s Chunky Knits

The words “chunky” and “knit” often send shivers down the fashion sets’ spines – how on earth can one look both slim and glamorous wrapped in a thick swathe of wool? Equally, don’t knitted garments equate to prissy twin sets, school uniforms and granny’s favourite cover-up? Before you completely dispel the idea of wrapping up in a chunky knit this season, read on for some fabulous dressing tips that are far from proper.

Say goodbye to the twin set and put away the flimsy cashmere sweaters for a season – instead embrace super thick knits in the form of long cardi-coats, swishy sweater dresses and boxy cardigans. Chunky knits should form the statement element of your outfit and stand out on account of their volume and shape. Vary your look with different, chunky styles, choosing cropped, cocoon-shaped cardigans for a casual day look or pick out a chunky detail cardigan coat featuring cabling, huge buttons, bobbles or if you’re feeling daring, look for pieces with feather detail – achingly on-trend for this season, best in jet black.

A long chunky knit cardigan is a must-have cover-up for winter, offering a cooler but cosier alternative to the full-length winter coat. Great for those confusing, in-between seasons where a coat’s too hot and a jacket too chilly, the cardi-coat is making a comeback and can be more stylish than you think if worn right.

Choose a belted cardi-coat or be innovative with your own thick waist-belts and cinch your knit at the top of the hips to create instant curves. Thin belts work just as well on slightly plainer, thinner knit cardi-coats but always wear elegantly on the waist – the only way to wear belts this season.

A great addition to your capsule wardrobe, also look out for boxy, chunky knit cardigans in cropped shapes. Balancing your outfit is crucial when wearing chunkier, more textured fabric in order to keep your silhouette slim and elegant. Avoid wearing boxy knit tops and cardi-coats with flare jeans, wide leg trousers or swing skirts – instead team with skinny jeans, high-waisted pencil skirts and always wear with heels keeping the volume of the knit in check. Another great way of glamorising a chunky knit is to team with the most delicate, ladylike shirts and camisoles – think silky, pussy-bow blouses, sheer tops and delicate, floaty dresses under more dominant, chunky wool coat.

Last but not least, don’t forget to opt for woollen sweater dresses this fall. Be ready to expose your pins this winter – or at least give the trousers a break for a while. A perfect alternative to dull office wear, hunt out a basic, woolly black dress and enjoy the versatility of looks you can achieve with this fantastic, cosy version of the LBD. Choose a pinafore style and wear with a tailored shirt underneath, or create a funky evening look and wear with thick (80 denier) tights in bright block colours (we love subtle but striking deep purple and scarlet shades). For the finishing touch, pull on a fabulous, towering pair of patent courts or shoe boots for an on-trend, alternative to knee-high boots.
