Scientists in London have discovered that premature babies born at 23 weeks gestational age feel pain. Brain scans were used in the study of 18 preemies, and determined that reactions from standard NICU procedures, such as a heel prick, were due to pain recognition and not simple reflexes, as previously thought.

This finding could be crucial in the fight against late-term abortions, which in some states can happen up to 38 weeks of pregnancy. If more mothers of crisis pregnancies are aware of this fact, I believe that it could greatly reduce the number of abortions in the United States. (Abortion clinics commonly tell pregnant women that the baby cannot feel any of the procedure because their brain isn’t fully developed.)
