How to Make Ribbon Curls

Ribbon curls are sleek and look like a piece of satin ribbon gently falling into spirals. You can update your spiral curls simply by choosing a different appliance to create them. You can get these beautiful shiny ribbon like curls by using your narrow flat iron.
Shampoo and condition your hair with high quality products that are formulated for your hair texture. Shiny curls come from healthy hair. Spray on thermal protection to protect your hair’s condition from the heat of the flat iron. To prepare your hair to hold the curls, towel blot and apply medium to firm hold styling gel or styling foam. Work it through from the roots to the ends and use a comb to distribute it. Blow your hair dry for fullness brushing it smooth as you go.
First, decide on the size of the curls that you want. A one inch square piece of hair will produce curls the size that this model is wearing. Larger sections, such as four inch squares will produce larger undulating coils or gentle waves. Experiment with different sizes for different styles.
Follow these steps and practice to produce perfect ribbon curls.
  • Section off a piece of hair in the appropriate size.
  • Clamp your flat iron over the hair close to the base.
  • Slowly run it down the strand, warming the hair and creating a sleek and shiny surface. The heat of the iron works with the styling product to produce a smooth finish.
  • Return the iron to the base of the strand of hair and clamp it over the hair again holding the ends of the strand with your other hand.
  • Turn the iron and begin wrapping the strand of hair around the flat iron – about half way around.
  • Release the tension on the iron and slide it farther down the strand.
  • Repeat the process as you work your way down the strand.
When you get to the ends of the strand, you may need to readjust the iron to finish the curl. You can create a tight ringlet on the end or form them into a loose curve.
The flat iron pictured here is a BaBlyss Pro. It has one inch ceramic plates and easy grip handle. It gets very hot in order to produce great results. Irons that don’t heat to the proper temperature produce more frustration than results. Proper temperature depends on your hair. If your hair is very strong and hard to control, higher temperatures are necessary. Fine hair requires milder temperatures. This iron also has felt on the outside to aid in controlling the hair however this isn’t a necessary feature for home use.
