Candles are one of the most versatile tools a person can have. There is a long history of candles being used for prayer and meditation in almost all religions. You can walk into many churches and light a candle in prayer, or see candles lit to honor ancestors or deities all over the world. But where do they fit into a Wiccan practice? How can we use them to bring change into our lives? For that is what magick is at its heart, using your will to make changes in your life.
How many people have made a wish before blowing out the candles on a birthday cake? Candle magick can be as simple as that, or it can be as complex and intricate as you want to make it. Here are some simple guidelines to follow when considering candle magick.
As with any magickal spell or working, the most important factor when considering candle magick is your intent. You must know very clearly what it is you want before you can ask for it. There are many ways to go about clarifying the ideas in your head. You can journal about them or make lists, ask for help in dreams or do divination. A clear intent is important because if your intent is cloudy, the energy you are sending out will be cloudy as well. Here too, is the time to consider your ethics and to make sure that what you are asking for is not going to harm or manipulate anyone, including yourself. You want to ask for the change in yourself and your own life without affecting others.
Once you know what it is you would like to change in your life, you will need to gather the supplies. You will, of course, need a candle. The color of candle you choose will lend energy to the work you are doing. This article can give you some ideas about which candles to choose. You may also consider using scented oil to anoint your candle and lend further energy to your spell. This is also the time to gather any other items you need for the working, such as herbs and fabric to make a sachet or charm, tarot cards to aid your focus, or anything else you choose to incorporate. Write the words you wish to say over the candle. Again, keep ethics in mind as you prepare the words. Be careful in how you are wording the spell. Make sure that you are clearly stating your wishes.
Now that you have gathered all of your tools together, it is time to work the magick. Arrange the items however it feels comfortable to you on an altar or flat surface. Please keep fire safety in mind! With a knife or other pointy tool inscribe any keywords or symbols that accompany your intent into the candle, anoint it, and light the candle. Meditate on the intent for a while as it burns. It is often helpful to keep a record of what you did and how it worked in a journal or Book of Shadows. That way, if you perform the spell again you can make any changes that you feel will aid your intent.
These are just some very basic guidelines for working with candle magick. There are many books available on the subject, which can give more detailed descriptions and ideas. As I mentioned previously, you can make candle magick very simple or very complex. Itís all up to you.
