Laura E. Holman, author of, “Behind the Mask,” has written a very gripping book detailing the sexual abuses that she endured, as well as various other forms of abuse. She begins by sharing her childhood and the extreme abuse that she and her mother experienced at the hand of her step-father. Laura shares from the depths of her soul about the several rapes she endured. The rapists included family members and strangers, ending tragically with a pastor in the church she attended.
She speaks candidly about her feelings, thoughts, emotions, and the turmoil she felt within. She shares how she was affected by the violence she witnessed and endured throughout her life. At one point in her life, she turned to substance abuse and prostitution, thinking it was her only way out of the pain.
However, perhaps most important in Laura’s story, is the way in which she had such divine intervention and protection. On numerous occasions, she witnessed firsthand the miraculous hand of God upon her life. After many years of suffering and torment, Laura comes to know Jesus in a way that is similar to a loving relationship that so many long for. She shares about how God entered her life, cradled her in his love and grace, and embraced her in his compassion and protection, much like a loving and doting father does for his child.
Laura speaks directly to the spirit of the victim of abuse. She speaks of the love that God holds for them. She speaks to them that it is not their fault. I recommend this book to all Christian victims of child abuse.
