I’ve been using nontoxic cleansers for about 3 years now. I first became interested in natural cleaning products when my son was teething and chewing on everything! I wanted to kill germs, but I didn’t want to expose my child to harmful toxins such as chlorine. I also started looking at the back of his baby shampoo and lotion and was horrified! It was then that I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to create a natural home for my loved ones.
I have tried Seventh Generation’s line of cleaning products and have been happy with them. I‘ve also found the pine-scented Simple Green to be very effective, and it can be found at most grocery stores. When a scouring powder is needed, I use Heather’s Oxygen Bleach Cleanser or just plain baking soda.
My absolute favorite nontoxic cleanser is Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap. A whole bottle lasts me about 6 months! I squirt a bit in the bottom of a spray bottle and then fill with water. I use this cleaner on everything from my baby’s high chair tray to the bathroom sink. It’s great because it works while leaving a fresh scent of peppermint. Dr. Bronner’s Soaps also come in Tea Tree, Almond, and even unscented.
While it is important to use natural cleansers when cleaning your home, I believe it’s even more important to use natural cleansers on your body! I enjoy Jason’s organic body wash and Aubrey Organic’s shampoo. I recently ordered natural shaving gel that is wonderful! We’ve tried several toothpastes, and our favorite is “Cinnamint” by Tom’s of Maine. I also like the aloe vera toothpaste by Kiss My Face. A plethora of natural personal care products are available. I should note that Dr. Bronner’s soap which I mentioned earlier can also be used to for bathing and showering when diluted properly.
If you have children, you may want to look into using a natural line of diaper care and baby wash products. Typical baby products often contain harmful additives, so I use natural alternatives such as Weleda’s diaper cream and Burt’s Baby Bar.
Natural cleansers are pretty easy to find. Just check your natural food store or Mothernature.com. I do most of my online shopping there. Drugstore.com also carries natural cleaning products. You really just have to give several a try and see what you like and what you can afford.
If you need to be frugal, you can find recipes online that will help you clean your home naturally without emptying your wallet. Be sure to stock up on the tried and true vinegar and baking soda. It may take a little bit more elbow grease, but it’s worth it knowing that you’re creating a nontoxic, bleach-free home for your family.
