Brazilian -- The Grill from Ipanema

One of the greatest things about the MidAtlantic region is its ability to attract a beautiful array of cultures to its metropolitan areas. Washington, DC is a melting pot of culture, and its array of authentic cuisine reflects its diversity.

The Grill from Ipanema is one of DC’s best Brazilian restaurants. Located in Adams Morgan, a trendy northwest DC suburb, the restaurant provides diners not only with great food, but great atmosphere and service as well.

An appetizer of Carne de Sol com Mandioca ($8.95) easily feeds a party of three or four. It’s a medium-sized dish of fried beef and yuca—a delicious potato-like root grown originally in South America. Entrees include the Moqueca a Baiana Vieiras ($25.95), a hearty seafood stew of scallops served with a heaping bowl of seasoned rice, and the Frango a Cabo Frio ($18.95), a tantalizing sautéed chicken breast prepared with Brazilian flair.

The greatest dish at Ipanema, though, is the Bobo de Camarao ($22.95), a flavorful coconut-base stew of shrimp and vegetables with hints of tomato in a creamy dish laden with generous chunks of spring onions, garlic, crunchy nuts, green peppers and fresh herbs. The stew also comes with a plate of fluffy soft white rice and steamed vegetables.

Ipanema’s waitstaff was also surprisingly efficient. Quite beautiful, too. From the hostess to the waiter, I found myself surrounded by naturally friendly people. The pride they take in seating and serving their guests is really quite evident, and they do it with such hospitality.

Just walking distance from the Woodley Park/National Zoo metro stop on the Red Line, Ipanema is conveniently located near trendy shopping areas and entertainments. As a respite after a long day out and about or as the start of a glamorous evening, Ipanema is well worth a visit.
