The basic counts in music can be found in all styles of music - from Pink to Beethoven they all use the same beats and rhythms. So it's well worth any musicians while to learn these basic counts. One way to "drum" them into your self is to tap out the rhythms on a tabletop or similar. Counting the beats as you go if necessary and soon you'll be a master :).
Beating out a rough accompaniment to a song you have suddenly received inspiration for is a cool way to help remember the feel of the tune if you are away from your guitar/instrument, recording, or a writing down situation. It's a great way to help when writing songs and jotting down ideas in your head.
It can make you a better all round musician and it's fun!
Why not take it a step further? Check out this handy finger tapping drum kit tool for musicians. Use it to improve your rhythm and ideas, AND annoy your best friends and neighbors :).
