Sometimes those dealing with depression have a hard time focusing on positive or pleasurable events and activities. Instead, their thoughts of overwhelmed with the problems, fear, or anxiety facing them. Philippians 4:8 is a pleasant verse that reminds us to think about good things.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things,” King James Version.
By choosing to think about things that are pleasant rather than those that are distressing, we can encourage ourselves and fight the war of depression that takes place in the mind. This verse is also good for those who have low self-esteem and continually berate themselves in their own mind. Choose not to meditate on the negative but think upon things that are true, honest, just, pure, and lovely.
There are times in life when we feel forsaken, lost, unloved, or unwanted. The Bible reminds us that we are always loved by God and no matter what we are faced with in life, we are not alone. Psalm 40: 1-3, “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord,” King James Version.
Though we would love to see God swoop in the midst of our troubles and make them magically disappear, the Bible does not promise us that type of swift action. The Bible does promise, however, that if we continue to trust in God and put our care in Him, He will exalt us in due time. 1 Peter 5:6-7 states, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you,” King James Version.
Most important is to remember that during times of our greatest fears, sorrows, grief, and depression, we are to run to God and not run away from Him. King David reminds us in Psalms 42:11 to sing songs of praise to God, even in times of our deepest despair. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God,” King James Version.
No matter what you are going through, remember that you are not alone.
Everyone goes through times of darkness and depression. There is nothing wrong with seeking help or treatment for depression. I pray that you will find comfort and peace during these dark times and that these Bible verses will help you find joy during your time of sorrow.
