Here is a quick and easy list of my top ten favorite financial “thoughts” for women. These thoughts and tips are a powerful combination of right now action and long-term planning. Ask yourself this: “What will be my financial legacy?”
The actress Sophie Tucker probably said it best, “From birth to age 18, a girl needs good parents. From 18 to 35, she needs good looks. From 35 to 55 she needs a good personality. And from 55 on, she needs good cash.” A wise woman knows how to enjoy life now and still have a well thought out financial plan for her prosperous future.
Here are my top 10 financial thoughts for women:
1. Know what you want and why you want it.
The first step on the road to personal, professional and financial success is knowing what you want. Zig Ziglar characterizes not knowing as being a wandering generality. The same holds true for your financial future – what do you want and why do you want it? Having a clear picture of the future produces clear results.
2. Educate yourself.
Sometimes, the best education is self-education. In which financial areas do you feel less self-confident? Where and how can you gain more confidence in your ability to succeed and make smart financial decisions? Are there classes available, information online or a networking group that may have answers?
3. Surround yourself with knowledgeable, savvy, financially successful people.
Like attracts like. If you want to become more financially savvy, surround yourself with financially savvy people. Ask questions, listen carefully, and read what they are reading, go to the classes they attend – remember, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel!
4. Know which financial tools match your financial future.
Do your due diligence and carefully research your financial options. Know the investment and savings products currently on the market and understand how they may or may not fit your needs. Don’t leave your financial future strictly in the hands of others – be a proactive participant in your finances.
5. Use your instincts and keep your eyes open.
Women are intuitive – it’s when we go against our “gut instincts” that we often have regrets. If something doesn’t “feel” right, it probably isn’t right for you.
6. Take care of yourself.
As women we are often people pleasers. There are times when you have to have stand up and take care of ourselves. If others are financially going off in a direction that isn’t in your best interest, do what is best for you. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own financial actions.
7. Leave a positive financial legacy.
The younger generation is watching and as a role model you are leaving a legacy. Why not leave a legacy based on financial independence and savvy business decisions? Vow to leave a financial legacy that others will want to emulate.
8. Ask questions and listen carefully.
Speak up and speak out! You can’t find out what’s happening if you don’t ask. Well thought out questions produce well thought out answers. The clearer the answers, the better able you are to make wise decisions.
9. Have fun and enjoy your money.
Enjoy your money! Have fun, celebrate and live your life to the fullest. The key is having the wisdom to know when to save, invest and spend.
10. Pass on your knowledge.
Use what you learn to help other women prosper and thrive financially. Be a role model that others will want to follow and emulate.
Financial success comes in all shapes and sizes. One thing I know for sure- we each control our money habits and habits turn into lifestyles and lifestyles into a financial future and the future your legacy.
Let me ask you this: “What will be your financial legacy?”
