Midnight Moon (St. Martin's) by Lori Handeland is up first, with the latest in her 'Moon' series. Priestess Cassandra thinks she can finally get her most fervent desire. Her boss sends her into the Haitian jungle with Devon Murphy as her guide to locate the evil Jacques Mezareau. If you're a fan of the series, I'm sure this one was one you waited anxiously to snag. If you're not, well, this one may or may not be to your liking. I'm not a fan of stories told in first person as a rule, and that put me off at the start. I'm also not a real big werewolf fan (though there are exceptions, like Susan Krinard). I just didn't like this one, for the above reasons and more. Cassandra's goal is a bit disturbing, and that was probably my biggest issue with this one, even moreso than the werewolves and wereleopards and the first person. I just couldn't find it in me to sympathize with her, so I won't be picking up the previous books in the series, as I'd thought I might.
Edge of Fear (Ballantine) by Cherry Adair is the second of her Edge Brothers tales. This time, Caleb Edge gets his shot at breaking the centuries-old curse that's broken many hearts in their family. Heather Shaw, aka Hannah Smith, is his link to her criminal father and the terrorists he's worked with over the years. But Heather/Hannah doesn't know where her father is. She does, on the other hand, know she finds Caleb irresistible. This one is rather violent, and I'm not sure I quite liked Heather. On the other hand, Caleb is enjoyable, and I'm very much looking forward to brother Duncan's story next month. This one gets three and a half of Cupid's five arrows.
Return of the Highlander (Avon) by Sara Mackenzie rounds things out for us this week with Arabella Ryan coming face to face, sort of, with Morven Maclean, the Black Maclean while she's researching his history for her next book. Set in one of my favorite places in the world, this one gets off to a rather slow start, with Bella and her long-time boyfriend, while Maclean makes his way back to his old home. This one is complicated in some spots, slow in others. But I liked it anyway, because Bella and Maclean are a likable couple, and hey, it's in Scotland! I'm looking forward to seeing the next in this series, and hoping that the Fiosaiche has many more favorites to bring back to life. This one gets three and a half arrows as well.
