If you are planning a trip during the summer or fall season on the east coast, you might want to drive through the Adirondack Mountains in northeastern New York. This mountain range is located within the Adirondack Park area.
The Adirondack Park was created in 1892 by the state of New York. This park consists of over six million acres and is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon and the Smoky Mountains all put together. It’s hard to imagine any park that big!
Within the Adirondack Park you will find over 100 campgrounds, more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails, and 3000 lakes and ponds. A perfect area for outdoor lovers!
Many acres in the forest are old growth and have never been logged. This is because of the 1894 amendment to the New York Constitution which states that the land within the park “shall be forever kept as wild forest lands.”
The Adirondack Park is the largest park in United States outside of Alaska. It covers over 9,300 square miles. Some of the highest peaks of New York can be found in the Adirondack Mountain range.
The 1936 and 1980 Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid which is located within the Adirondack Park area. No doubt this is a winter haven for sports enthusiasts who like to cross country ski, downhill ski, or snowshoe.
Situated in the lower level of the park is Lake George. This lake is 32 miles long and 3 miles wide. No doubt there is plenty of room for a variety of activity on the water such as fishing, boating, or kayaking.
Within the Adirondack Park area, there are plenty of areas where fishing and hunting is allowed. The park is known to be a great place for birdwatchers since there are a variety of birds to be found and observed.
If you like taking scenic trips, then either a drive along the highway or a train ride will suit your needs. The views are spectacular no matter the season and either one will allow you a great view of the Adirondack Mountains.
