Technology In the News

Do you tweet? If you’re regularly on Twitter, you may have already heard about world renown fashion designer Kenneth Cole’s huge faux pas this week. The world has watched as dramatic events have unfolded in Egypt. Citizens rioting against government officials erupted in violence in the city’s square, wreaking havoc on the city and each other. Several people were killed and hundreds of others wounded. Despite the tragedy and despair felt by all following the events, Kenneth Cole somehow found enough humor in the situation to tweet this callous comment:

"Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo."

Of course the world was in an uproar after reading Cole’s comment. Immediately trying to repair the damage, he issued this apology:

"I apologize to everyone who was offended by my insensitive tweet about the situation in Egypt. I've dedicated my life to raising awareness about serious social issues, and in hindsight my attempt at humor regarding a nation liberating themselves against oppression was poorly timed and absolutely inappropriate."

Anti-government rebels haven’t only targeted Egypt’s square and denizens, but Egyptian websites are also under attack. Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak’s website was attacked as well as several other members of the Egyptian ruling party. A group fighting against internet censorship (among other things) working under the name Anonymous have accepted the blame for the online assaults.
