My favorite reality competition is having its toughest year yet! Tough as in, holy cow people are astounding! Now that the show has been on the air for about 5 years, people (dancers) who have grown up with the show are now on it, which means they are hot and hitting all of the right steps.
In previous years every week there would be a few couples that would be in danger as they just sucked. This year nobody sucks! Every dance number is fluid and brilliantly executed. How are you supposed to choose?
I have a few favorite dancers that I will list, but I would like to talk about the big reason I keep returning to the show. It is the main casting. Cat Deeley is just amazing. She is professional, genuinely nice, and so likeable. Nigel Lithgow is the executive producer and judge. He has quite the personality, and is real, but without the harshness of Simon Cowell. Then there is the always exuberant Mary Murphy. In past years I found her a bit annoying, but this year she seems to have toned it down a bit. We are missing Adam Shankman, who filled in last year for Mary. This year we also have the ever eloquent Little C who was missing last year. Make sure you have dictionary handy when he comments, jeeze. The guest judges have been fabulous this year with Debbie Reynolds and Kristin Chenoweth headlining the places, two amazing actresses, and dancers. Love, Love, Love, this show! It beats every other competition show without thought.
Wanna know why? First, it doesn’t pretend to be something its not. The title is America’s Favorite Dancer, not America’s Best Dancer. The first half of the season the judges have the final say in who goes home, as chosen by the bottom three voted couples. The second half of the season, when we reach the top ten, the viewing audience takes over and all of the voting off the island is decided by the votes. This is also when it changes from couples to individual dancers you are voting for. I have gotten pretty good at picking the better dancers. So far this year I have my eye on Jess LeProtto, Marko Germa, & Melanie Moore. One of these three will make it to the top. Keep your eyes open and vote for your favorites. They have online voting as well. The link to the official SYTYCD website and voting page are available on the BellaOnline Prime Time Forum. Let us know who you are voting for.
Last but not least, last year July 30th became National Dance Day! Communities all over the country are planning events for July 30th 2011, and SYTYCD has three different dances you can learn online to participate in National Dance Day! Get your groove on and spread the word!
