Foyer Decorating Ideas

Sometimes the foyer can be an awkward area. Not really a place to visit, the foyer is where visitors are greeted and ushered in or delivery people wait for their tip. Still, the foyer sets the tone for the rest of your home. It's the first thing guests see when they walk in the door. Unless you generally enter through the garage or side door, it's also the room that welcomes you home from work or school. It's also the last thing guests see when they're leaving, so the foyer should summarize the rest of the home and complement the adjoining rooms.

Painting a Foyer

Select a color that goes well with the rest of your home, a color that reflects your personality. Would you like to welcome guests to your upbeat, vibrant home or to your serene, calming home? What colors bring out the best in you and your family? What color meshes well with the rest of your home?

Foyer Furniture

A table for foyer items can really cut down the clutter. Foyer items would be guest purses and hats, jackets, umbrellas, keys and other things that are set down when one walks through the door. You can make or buy decorative key hooks and use a foyer table, hall table, or a coat rack to keep these items contained.

A Foyer bench provides a place to sit while waiting, or removing boots or shoes. You could also use a chair. This is a great place to put that mismatched chair that you love. A decorative seat cover that brings in design elements from the adjacent room will add to the coziness.

Foyer Lighting and Wall Decor

Many builders automatically use ceiling based foyer lighting. You could choose, however, to add a decorative wall sconce or table lamp to give your foyer its own unique style and showcase the personality of your home.

A wall shelf gives you a place to display art, sculpture, collectibles, greeting cards, or even fresh flowers. Nothing says "welcome home" quite like sentimental mementos.

Foyer Decorating

Keep in mind the significance of your foyer as you're decorating. Sometimes, the foyer is forgotten when it comes to home decor and the elements found there are simply by default. It can be an awkward space but thoughtfully painting a foyer and turning it into a deliberate display of your home's style is a great start.
