Pirates of New England

Thanks to Johnny Depp and the recently-released Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, pirates are enjoying a renewed popularity. After you’ve seen the movie once (or twice), and still can’t get enough pirate fare, here are some pirate-related links and activities.

The New England Pirate Museum in Salem, Mass., recalls the exploits of these blood-thirsty rascals, like Blackbeard and Captain Kidd, with artifacts and treasures of the pirates themselves, a pirate ship and a walking tour. The museum is open May through November, check for times.

Long Reach Cruises in Bath, Maine, offers one- and two-hour Pirate Cruises along Maine’s mid-coast, leaving from Bath. There’s a Kids’ Cruise, complete with booty from a treasure chest and of course, pirates! A two-hour Adult Pirate Cruise (where you are invited to “party like a pirate”) is also available. Grub and grog available aboard the ship.
Long Reach also offers other cruise choices.

Read more about New England pirates on Strange New England’s website. Read about pirate caves, treasure and even Captain Kidd’s Bible.

More reading material on pirates includes the bookThe Pirates of the New England Coast 1630-1730.

If by some chance you missed the first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, you missed an amazing movie. It’s even better than the second, in my opinion. I’ve seen it twice and can’t wait to see it again. Pirates of the Caribbean
Another pirate movie, an oldie but a goodie, is Blackbeard's Ghost

Want to dress like a pirate, for Halloween (or maybe even work)? You’ll find pirate togs at Carlisles Historic Clothing.

And finally, want to get your hands on some pirate booty? They even have Capt. Jack Sparrow’s hat! (Well, not the actual hat – a replica. I’m sure Jack wouldn’t give up his beloved captain’s hat that easily!) Check out: Pirate's Cove Market Place
