Retirement as a Christian

We often look at retirement either as an end to our usefulness or as a chance to rest and spend time on our favorite hobby. By all means, we should take a well-deserved break from the 9 to 5 daily grind and take more time for recreational activities. But is that all? Should Christians really retire? The psalmist, David, wrote, “My times are in Your hands.” (Psalm 31:15.) God has plans for us that help to build the Kingdom and those plans are infinitely more rewarding than a lifetime of rest and relaxation. And, He doesn’t consider age when He accepts our service. We can always be a vital part of His church.

In Psalm 31:4, David wrote, “Free me from the trap that is set for me, for You are my refuge.” He was speaking of armies who sought to kill him. The traps that are set for us are more likely to be idleness and self-indulgence or loneliness and depression. Anything that takes us away from God’s purpose for our lives is a trap.

Whatever you choose and are able to do in your retirement, use this time to grow closer to God. Now that you are not running off to the office, set a time every day for Bible study and prayer. You now have time for a Bible study class that requires more at home preparation, such as Bible Study Fellowship.

This is not the end of your career; it is a change of careers. It is not the end of your usefulness. It is just the beginning.
