Simplify the Holidays

It seems that each year the holidays get more and more complicated. The list of obligations grow and the stress increases. It's no wonder that some people dread this time of year. Try taking a few steps in decreasing the madness. Even if you only adopt a few of these tips, your life will flow more smoothly.

Do you need to buy gifts for all that you do? Can you pare the list down? Maybe if you have a large extended family, consider drawing names. If you need to pare down the gifts you give your children, discuss simplifying the season with them and the benefits it will give your family. A smaller credit card bill in January will be a gift to everyone.

Do you get crazy baking dozens of different types of cookies? Is it overwhelming and exhausting searching for all of the ingredients? Consider making one or two favorite kinds. Also, you could participate in a cookie exchange. At a cookie exchange, you bring a large platter of one type of cookie and exchange for many different kinds. It's a fun way to sharing baking ideas.

Do you cook a big meal for your family? Consider making the big meal a family potluck where everyone brings a dish. Or consider enlisting the help from family members when cooking the meal. Even small children can be given small tasks. Teens may act unable, but they are more than capable. Everyone can help!

Too many parties?
One person can only do so much. Don't overcommit yourself. Say yes to the important gatherings and take a pass on the less critical ones. Quiet times during the holidays can be just as special. Your sanity will thank you.

Do you go all out? Does your house rival the Griswalds'? Consider paring that down. Do a simple wreath on the door and a simple light display. Enlist your family in assisting you in putting up the tree. Simplicity is the new thing, be trendy this year!

After paring down the craziness, ask yourself what you want from the holiday season. Do you want to spend more tIme with family? Do want to find some quiet time with yourself? Looking to give back to a charity? Wanting to find something more meaningful? Asking these questions can help you hone into what you do want.

The holidays have become very commercialized. This commercialization has increased societal stress. Take back your life by adopting some simple ways to celebrate the holidays.
