Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits

These are the most wonderful biscuits that I have ever made. A favorite of my entire family, I hope that you will enjoy making them as much as I do.

Since you make them yourself, the biscuits will have no artificial ingredients, no hydrogenated oil, and no artificial flavors. They are just full of goodness that your entire family will enjoy.

Biscuits are simple to make. So don’t let fear of failure stop you from making these. To make the buttermilk biscuits, you will need the following ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose or bread flour
Pinch of baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 ¼ cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons butter (not margarine)

First, if you don’t have buttermilk, make some by putting 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar in a measuring cup, then adding enough milk to make 1 ¼ cups. Allow to sit for a few minutes.

Preheat your oven to 475 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder. Now mix the oil and buttermilk into the flour mixture. You can mix the wet ingredients into the dry with a wooden spoon or with a large fork. Mix them together until the dough is smooth.

Sprinkle flour on a cutting board, tray, or whatever you are going to place the dough on to knead it. Roll the dough out onto your prepared board. Dust your hands with flour to keep the dough from sticking to them and knead the dough until it is no longer sticky. You may need to dust the dough with more flour. Each time you fold the dough over while kneading it, you create layers in the biscuits. So the more you fold the dough over, the more layers you will have.

Once the dough has been thoroughly kneaded, roll it out until it is about ½-inch thick. Take a break now and butter your baking sheet. Go back to your rolled out dough. Cut your biscuits out with a biscuit or cookie cutter. (Your biscuits don’t have to be round.)

Place them on the buttered baking sheet with a bit of space in between each biscuit. Once they are all on the baking sheet, top each biscuit with a bit of real butter.

Bake for about 14 minutes. Take them out when the tops are golden brown and the centers are done. These are great served with just butter, or butter and honey mixed together. My husband likes to make sausage biscuits out of them.
