Every year has highlights and lowlights and 2010 was no different. No matter which style of music tops your play list, women have been influential. Was one artist a one hit wonder? Did someone get overlooked? Who received more hype than they deserved? Questions like this can go on infinitum, so here are four talents that deserve more of our attention and four to toss.
Christina Aguilera had a seemingly rough year complete with divorce, average album sales and a box office flop. Given all of that, you only have to hear that crazy voice to know that none of this was her doing. Aguilera will be a major force as long as she wants to be and hearing the passion that comes from inside of her lets the world know she wants to be here a long time.
Florence and the Machine could be seen and heard everywhere: television programs, movie soundtracks, concerts, and award shows. 2010 will be a year to remember for Florence and now that we have gotten a taste of her with Lungs, we will keep coming back for more of this complete package.
She became the Queen of Everything as her album Kaleidoscope Heart was recognized by critics and public alike as an honest gift to her fans. Sara Bareilles now has another three Grammy nominations and has deservedly grabbed our attention.
With many being introduced to Kate Miller-Heidke and her album Curiouser, it became easy and down right pleasant to learn that pop could be a wonderful candy – fun and good for you. More singers are needed that can show they enjoy what they do and not get caught in the crowd.
It was another year of living the dream for Katy Perry, but this in one star that is fading fast. Listening to Teenage Dream one can hear shades of Gwen Stefani, without the talent Gwen Stefani has. Perry will need to come up with a little extra something to avoid oblivion and this is not going to happen.
Lady Gaga knows how to work the media, her music, her image, and her fans to generate sales and dollars. She also knows how to show her true colours. With atrocities such as her "Alejandro" video and the meat dress, she makes it perfectly clear that making money is more important than being a responsible artist. Her contributions simply do not offer enough substance to warrant tolerating a failure such as this. Unfortunately, she seems to have poised herself for longevity and will not be going away anytime soon.
Sometimes somebody comes along that we want to love, but they just do not give us a reason to do so. Susan Boyle blossomed overnight and reached her pinnacle the next day. We went out and bought I Dreamed a Dream then let it gather dust as we realized she does not possess the ability to handle the stresses that come with an entertainer's life.
Speak Now was a rather unfortunate album title for an artist that goes out of her way to not say anything. Taylor Swift needs to amp up her efforts if she wants to stay on top of the country charts and it is unlikely this Disney creation will be able to accomplish that.
Have a look back at this past year and see who will be sharing 2011 with you.
