Three-Dragon Ante

Three Dragon Ante is a speciality card game that can either be played inside a Dungeon and Dragons campaign setting or as a standalone game. The game has beautiful, oversize cards featuring nice artwork. Three Dragon Ante's game concept is easy for anyone to catch onto. You do not need to play Dungeon and Dragons to understand it. In fact, the standalone games doesn't really contain any role playing elements.

The deck consists of 70 playing cards which consists of dragons, mortals, and dragon gods. Each card has a numeric value or strength from 1 to 13 and a special power. Listed on each card are its name and its type: good, evil, or mortal.

Each player begins the game with 50 gold. You can either use poker chips or loose change to denote your money. Players are dealt four cards and must ante a card to start the game. Ante cards are held in front of the player and are all revealed at the same time. The person who plays the highest valued ante card goes first. The value(strength) of the card is also the amount of gold each player must ante. Place the ante cards in the middle of the table along with the gold.

The first person places one of their cards face up in front of them. Its special power automatically happens. Some special powers allow the player may get to draw extra cards, or another example is to take cards from the ante. Play continues clockwise. The next person lays down one of their cards. If the strength(value) of their card is less than the one previous played, then its special power triggers. If the card is of higher value, then the special power doesn't activate.

Once everyone has played one card, the person in the lead goes first for the next round. The playing of three rounds is called "The Gambit." The three cards in front of the player is called "The Flight." The person with the highest valued flight wins the ante. He/she collects his gold while the ante cards go to the discard pile. After each gambit, players are dealt two cards.

Play continues with another ante and gambit until someone runs out of money. You can run out of money during the gambit, but if you can't pay your debt by the end of it then the game is over. The person with the most gold wins.

Special flights offer some rewards for players who achieve them. A color flight is having three dragons of the same color. A strength flight is playing three cards of the same strength.

Three Dragon Ante is a very entertaining card game. It doesn't take long to get the hang of the game and is great for a large group of people. The game also comes with two easy to follow rules card so not everyone is having to use the one rulebook. Three Dragon Ante is produced by Wizards of the Coast. More information about the game can be found on the Wizards website.
