How to Make Perfumes for Spring Season

It's Springtime, and Perfume's In the Air! With the flowers blooming, especially honeysuckle hanging over the fence, the natural beauty of scent is all around you. But how do you bring nature's gift of scent into your own space and make it work for you?

Create Your Own Scents!

In order to make your own scents, you'll need three important things: Essential Oils, alcohol and distilled water. When you're making perfume, it's a good idea to have some knowledge of the type of scent you want to make. The choice of essential oil will determine the beauty or not so beautiful aroma that you create.

One important thing to note is that perfumes have three base levels when you're making them, they're also referred to as base note, middle notes and top notes.

Essential oils that are categorized as base notes are: Sandalwood, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Rose, Amber, Frankincense, Cedarwood and Rosewood.

Middle Note essential oils are: Lemon Grass, Geranium, Chamomile, Fennel, Lavender, Rosemary, Spikenard and Marjoram.

Top Note essential oils are: Rose, Bergamot, Lavender, Lemon, Tangerine, Verbena and Neroli.

This list of oils barely scratches the surface of the oils that are available in category, so a little research on your part will open your world to a lot more choices. Carrier oils and alcohol (vodka) will set the base for your blends. The best carrier oil is Jojoba oil but you can also use Almond or Apricot kernel oil. Ok, it's time to get to work.

Here are a few recipes for you to play with and test your creative juices. Unless otherwise stated, the base for all perfume recipes will be:

1 teaspoon of Jojoba oil
1 teaspoon of Alcohol (Vodka)

It's Spring time and Love is in the air so:

3 drops of Jasmine
3 drops of Neroli
3 drops of Orange

A Good Night's Sleep

3 drops of Lavender
3 drops of Neroli
2 drops of Spearmint

Lavender Lover

6 drops of Lavender
4 drops of Frankincense
1 drop of Rosewood

Floral Nights

2 tablespoons of Jojoba Oil
3 drops of bergamot
2 drops of Neroli
8 drops of Jasmine
12 drops of Geranium
8 drops of Ylang-Ylang
4 drops of Patchouli

Remember to ...

Add your essential oils to your container first and then add your carrier oil and alcohol. Store your creation in a cool dark place. Don't forget to give your bottle a little upside down shake every day. After about 12 days, you can begin to experience the beauty of your aromatic blends.
