Here are some interesting facts that you may not know about horses. Horses are very fascinating and can teach us so many things about ourselves. You could study them for a long time and still not know everything about them.

A horses hoof will grow approximately ¼ inch per month. It takes the hoof almost a year to grow out from the coronet band to the ground.

A horse is measured in hands which is set at four inches, the width of a man's hand. They are measured from the top of the withers to the ground.

The pulse rate of a healthy adult horse should be between 36 to 40 beats per minute when at rest.

The horse has approximately 205 bones in their body.

The Arabian is the only horse that has one less rib, lumbar bone and one less tail vertebra.

The Falebella horse from Argentina is the smallest breed of horse.

A foals milk teeth are replaced by permanent teeth around three to five years of age. The horses permanent teeth never stop growing therefore they get longer with age.

Horses have the largest eyes of any land animal.

The horses heart is bigger than their brain and weighs between nine to ten pounds. The heart is big so that it can pump a sufficient amount of blood to keep them running fast.

Horses don't have gall bladders.

A horses hooves are made from the same protein as found in human hair and fingernails.

Horses can sleep standing up. They spend more time standing up sleeping than lying down because it takes more energy to lay down.

Horses have better memories than elephants.

A horse can't see directly in front or directly behind them. They have binocular vision and can see different things in each eye. Always watch their ears if you really want to know what they are focused on.

Horses unlike humans can't vomit or breathe through their mouths. Whatever they eat will go through the digestive system so any toxins could cause great harm.

Horse defecate up to 15 times a day because of their super-quick digestive system.

A horses small intestine is 50 to 70 feel long and holds 10 to 12 gallons.

The adult female horse has 36 teeth while the male will generally have 40 teeth.

The state animal of New Jersey is the horse.

The Akhal-Teke is a breed of horse in Russia that can go for days without water or food. This would be a great horse to have if you're ever stranded in the desert.
