Creating A Space For Yourself

At one time or maybe a dozen, parents have heard and teens have said, "I need my own space." What does this mean? Exactly what it reads. Everyone, no matter their age, needs a space for themselves. Even if you don't have your own room, you need to find a place that's just for you.

Why is this so called "space" important? It's because that while humans are social, we are also reflective, creative, thoughtful, studious and more than occasionally seek a bit of privacy. We need a place to be alone. We have the desires to create, read, study, think about our world, our life, or to just take a break from all the noise and activity of our everyday surroundings.

As a teenager, where you will find your own space can or cannot be tricky. You might be lucky enough to have your own room, or you might not. If you do share a room, maybe you can have a desk or table in a corner. Some rooms have large closets. Don't laugh, but even a corner of a large closet can be used for a cool space. If your house has a nice basement or attic, check it out. You might find an awesome space for yourself. You could make yourself a space in a family room, or even in an area of a utility room. Talk to your parents and ask for their help. Parents will understand your need for a little space.

Once you have determined and declared a space for yourself, you can now have a little fun. When you are ready to set-up your corner of the world, think about what things you will be doing and what things you want around you. For you creative side, you will want your art, doodling, writing, or journaling supplies. If this is also your study area, make a place for your text books and school notebooks, computer or tablet. If you are reading, keep some of your favorite books, as well as the current ones you are reading in your space. What about music? Do you have a device with your play list loaded, or your CD collection close at hand? Don't forget about the visual side! You might also want your favorite movies, or entire collection (if possible) in your space.

You want to surround yourself with things that make you happy, creative, content, mindful, and inspired in your own space. It's exactly just that — your own space and place to be yourself.
