Your heart, a muscle about the size of a fist, pumps blood through a network of vessels. Blood carries oxygen and food to your trillions of living cells - wherever the nutrients are needed. It also works a second job, collecting garbage and waste products to carry away for disposal.
This system is huge. Your blood vessels, stretched end to end, would wrap around the world two times. And, it’s fast –taking only about 45 seconds to make the entire circuit. During this rapid transit, your blood always circulates in the same direction using a figure eight pattern. That is, if everything goes well.
