Preschool Program Expectations

If you are currently searching preschool programs for your child you need to know what to expect. Basics are key, of course. Reading and language arts instruction, phonics, math, science, physical education, art and music, socilization and a community environment are all crucial. Here is a list of typical and extra offerings that many preschools provide. Keep in mind that if there are ideas you like here that your child's preschool does not foster you can suggest the ideas to them.

1. Language Arts and Writing Journals.

2. Hands on Math and manipulatives.

3. Centers, such as role playing, art and tactile area (ie. sand play).

4. Simple science experiments.

5. Phonics.

6. Outdoor play and group games.

7. Spanish instruction.

8. Sign Language instruction.

9. Daily storytime.

10. Sharing time, or show and tell.

11. Field Trips that are age appropriate and often tie into curriculum.

12. Musical exploration.

13. Crafts.

14. Art appreciation and projects.

15. Dramatic play and puppetry.

16. Cutural programs, such as country themed events.

17. Geography and community/neighborhood education.

18. Calendar time daily.

19. Seasonal celebrations.

20. Nutritional instruction, importance of staying active.

21. Various physical education opportunities, from swimming to bowling.

22. Storytelling with flannel boards.

23. Character Education.

24. Mother's and Father's Day events, such as a tea or picnic.

25. Competitive play, such as relays or "Olympic" events.

26. In class parties where the whole family can join in.

27. Open house or talent nights.

28. Cooking (easy instruction).

29. Hands on animal exposure- such as a classroom pet, like a rabbit. Also, many classrooms have chicks that hatch in the Spring, or they participate in a butterfly garden.

30. Health and safety education, such as fire prevention and hand washing techniques.

Finding the perfect preschool program is impossible, but if you know what you are looking for your task will be alot easier. Here are some great books to aid you in your search:
