Start your Own Lawn Care Business

Lawns. Every city, neighborhood, town, community has them, and they all need maintenance. Have you ever thought of turning your love for green lawns into green cash? If not perhaps you should!

There are many good things about starting your own lawn service. The first is flexibility. You can work as little or as much as you like. And it’s been my experience that once you make a customer happy you can keep them for the life of your business. Even lawn services that don’t do so well keep working because most are too busy to go out and find someone new. This is the case with my friend Josh. He has been using the same lawn service for about ten years. He’s not that happy with the job they do. They are usually in and out in about 15 minutes and they never weed or give special attention to his flower beds…even when he asks them to! However, finding a new service will take time and my friend has a very busy work schedule with a long commute and he does not have the time to look for or interview a new lawn service. So year after year he keeps complaining about wanting a service that will pay a little more attention to his lawn, and year after year he continues on with the same service.

Now, if a lawn company can make money and keep an unhappy customer for years, think of what a good service can do! A good company can provide not only a mowing service, but additional services such as light tree trimming, watering and even taking care of plants when their customers are out of town.

There are many resources available on the web that will walk you through what it takes to get started in the business. I checked out several and found that some companies offer every thing from lawn care software to business forms.

Here are a few tips that can help you get started

*If you don’t know much about lawns/gardening make a trip into your local gardening store or home store and ask a few questions. Remember, you want to know enough to take good care of your customer’s lawns and not do damage. Find out which tools work best are the fastest and most durable. Since you will most likely do several lawns in a day you want to make sure that your equipment can withstand the constant use.

*Have a talk with a lawn person in your area. Ask them about the pros and cons of the business.

*Start slow. At first you may want to service only a few laws a week to get yourself used to the pace and the job. Don’t over commit and then not be able to follow through. When my lawn guy tells me he’s coming I expect him to show up. Out of sight does not mean out of mind in this case.

*Ask for referrals. It’s always a good idea to get referrals when ever possible. This gives you instant credibility with the friends and family of your customers.

*Make sure it’s something that you will enjoy. If it’s not fun then you won’t want to show up for work or will do a poor job.

Starting a lawn care business is a good idea if you want to make good money with little investment.
