Little Birds - Book Review

First, let me say, in the interest of honest disclosure, that I received an advance, review copy of this book from the publisher, at no cost to me. Having said that, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book!

Little Birds, 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt and Love, compiled by Susanne Woods, is published by Stash Books which is a new imprint of C&T Publishing. Little Birds is one of the first four books published by Stash Books, and is also the first in a series entitled Design Collective. The talents of many different artists are combined in here, which is fun to see how the subject is interpreted by more than just one person.

This book combines two of my favorite things, doll making and birds. There are patterns and instructions for making more than ten different birds. The birds range from somewhat realistic to completely fanciful and are absolutely darling. The patterns are clear and easy to use and the instructions are in depth. When I looked at some of the projects they looked very involved and possibly difficult, albeit intriguing. But, after reading the instructions, I don't think there are any projects that I couldn't complete.

The color photographs are both beautiful and very helpful, since there are quite a few closeups to assist with making and decorating the birds. The only problem I have with the book, and I'm not sure if it is just my copy, but the photos of the artists are not very clear. I like the idea of having a photo and information about each artist, I just wish the artist photos were better.

In addition to the bird figures there are projects that include nests, cages, wreaths, mobiles and flat embroidery as well as quilts and an apron. I'm having a hard time choosing my favorite bird, I love them all, but I think my favorite is the "Little Round Bluebird".

Little Birds is not in book stores yet, it will be published in June, 2010. But it can be pre-ordered, or suggest that your local library order it.
