Paula Pryke Book Review

Floral designer Paula Pryke never seems to run out of ideas. In her new book, she presents refreshing designs for hobbyist and professional alike.

“Paula Pryke’s Simple Flowers” was published by Ryland Peters and Small. This edition has more inspiring ideas than you could ever use in a single year. In this title, the author has devoted an individual chapter to each of the four seasons.

Right now while we’re in the middle winter, do get a copy and check out the simple, yet elegant ideas that will add seasonal touches to your home. Pryke has the ability to take a common material, and use it in new and innovative ways. For example, she has an antidote to the usual overdone Christmas decorations. Rather than indulging in excess, follow her understated way of displaying twig designs instead. This title features tasteful holiday ideas that are festive without screaming for attention.

For each of the other three seasons, she presents refreshing designs that are suitable for various decorating schemes and situations. Her design techniques and artistic interpretations continue to evolve with this volume presenting Ikebana-style ones along with minimalist ones to modern contemporary floral designs. For some of the projects, there are complete step-by-step instructions with a list of the materials needed.

In this book Pryke shows why every detail matters in floral arrangements. She devotes a separate chapter to containers. However, floral containers aren’t essential as she so readily shows in the chapter on wrapping and tying.

Pryke also presents appealing ways to use a single type of flower. There is also an inspirational chapter on how to mix the different kinds of flowers. She takes the reader step-by-step on how to create compatible combinations.

In this edition, Pryke tackles a subject that is ignored in some floral design books—how to care and maintain your floral arrangements.

This book contains lush photos by James Merrell.
