Writing a new article takes getting your ideas organized. When you sit down to the computer, you want to have your ideas ready so the words will flow freely. The problem is that sometimes the words don’t come. You are sitting there looking at a blank screen for several hours but the words do not flow. Here are a few ways to get those creative juices flowing:
Do something else. It is good to look away for a little while. Use the computer to surf a little or look at a magazine. Sometimes you need to look at something else to open the creative flood gates.
Have a cup of tea or coffee and explore your mind. Breathe deeply and allow your mind to relax and dream. You will be surprised at how many great ideas you come up with.
Brainstorm by writing down everything that comes to mind. Similar to what you would do at work, write down everything you can think of. Write down even the things that seem very silly. Set aside 5 or 10 minutes to do the exercise. Giving yourself a time limit will allow you to be more passionate about it sooner. You never know when a great idea will come your way.
Think about your fondest memory. Sometimes when you think too hard about a particular topic, it just won’t come. Thinking about something else really opens your mind. Your emotions are tied to the fondest memory and you can trick yourself into really enjoying yourself. When you come back to your article, you will feel fresh and rested.
Work on your time management. If after several times you have writer’s block, journal what helps you get past it and how long it takes. Use this as a way to help you work on your time management. You know that if it takes you three attempts to write an article then you can incorporate that into the project plan. By doing so, you won’t have to worry or feel like your time is crunched. Sometimes just the fact that you don’t have a deadline looming over your head is enough to unlock your thoughts.
Research your topic. Even if you are an expert in your field, you must keep up with current events. There may be something new on the horizon that will help you begin your article.
The words will flow on your article. Just take the time to allow them to flow naturally. If you push it, you will end up with a writer’s block. Be good to yourself and don’t add pressure to an already tense situation.
