Acrylic Nails Are They Safe?

The popularity of artificial nails has grown through out the last few years. There is no denying that longer nails are attractive and feminine. I myself treat myself to them ever so often. They’re are things that every women should know prior to getting this popular nail treatment.

Acrylic nails are very popular due to their low cost. The nail is typically roughened prior to applying a mixture of liquid and powder to elongate the nail. Once hardened it is one of the strongest artificial nails available and lasts about two weeks before needing to be refilled.

However you must do your research before deciding to opt for this type of nail extension. MMA (methyl methacrylate) was once widely used in nail salons as the preparation of choice. It is currently banned in Canada some US states as well as London , however may still be available in some lower end salons.

The use of MMA in acrylic nails has the potential for the loss of the natural nail as well as painful tearing if your nail should happen to break or get caught in something. It also has potential adverse effects in regards to allergies and respiratory illnesses.

Currently ethyl methacrylate (EMA) is the better choice when it comes to acrylic nails, it is more flexible and less damage occurs to the nail should you decide to remove them (Removal should only be done by a professional).

To ensure that your nail technician is using EMA in the application of your acrylic nails here are some guidelines from Health Canada to follow:

1.Ask the technician about the chemicals used, be weary if the technician will not show you or tell you the brand being used.

2. If the cost seems too good to be true it probably is MMA acrylic nails are generally 1/3 the cost of other alternatives.

3. If the chemicals being applied to your nail are very pungent that may cause dizziness or light headedness.

If you chose to get acrylic nails or any service from a salon, always do so from a reputable nail salon. Make sure the salon is clean and well kept. The licenses should be posted or available for you to see. Ask about their sanitation procedures, and remember do not be afraid to ask about any concerns you may have, it is not only your nails you are worrying about, it is also your health.

With these guidelines in mind, you can have an enjoyable experience with acrylic nails.
