Magic - Your Child's Hobby

I am blessed to do educational assemblies in school. My Magic of Science Show demonstrates how magicians use science to fool us. One of my hopes when I do the show, is that the children's appreciation of magic will lead to a greater interest in science and books.
If your child expresses an interest in magic, I encourage you to feed that interest. You will find that magic will have a wonderful effect on your child.
Your child will have more confidence. Showing their tricks will help some children overcome shyness. Just having the knowledge, knowing how something others do not can be a great confidence boost.
When your child achieves a new skill level or learns a new skill, his or her confidence can also be boosted. The first time they truly fool you will be a moment they will never forget.
Your child will also become more curious about how things work. Suddenly science is no longer boring, it is active and alive. After showing students a simple magic trick using mathematics, I have watched them trying different ways to work the trick. They try to prove it doesn't always work. They try to see if little changes to the formula can create a new trick.
It always amazes teachers to see their students doing math and enjoying it. You will be surprised at the new interests your child develops as they advance in magic.
You can buy your child some effects and tricks at the magic shop or online, but I recommend library books. In both the children's and adult sections, you will find a wealth of knowledge on the art of illusion.
Books with tricks your child can make. Books with history of magic, but also how magic changed history. Did you know stage magic was once used to end a war?
You will find books that teach how to use chemistry, physics, mathematics and more to produce magical results. Books that will encourage your child to read.
Dear parent, if your child ever expresses an interest in magic, do your child and yourself a favor. Encourage it. Most children will leave the hobby behind at some point, but it may be the springboard to greater success in whatever field they enter.
