HillCap Tournament

Our golf club will be hostess to this golf event coming up in May. This group called HillCap includes nine golf courses with in the Hill Country in Central Texas. The event is held at a different course in a round robin way and Mill Creek will be involved this year. There was a meeting of the nine golf courses at our club house on Thursday January 25 at 9:00 AM. This meeting was organized to make arrangements for the coming year. The format is gross and net handicap play and all entrants who sign up to enter these events will be awarded golf balls if they win their flight.

I was asked to play with any of these guest if they so choose to play our course. I was to arrive at 10:00 AM as their tee times were for 10:30. I found out there were only three of these guest who wanted to play our course. They all came from different courses around Austin, Texas. Two of the girls had never played this course before so it was job to explain each hole and where trouble is on each hole. We have had much rain in the previous week which caused flooding and a wet course meant cart path only.

We also have many water hazards so I warned them to be aware as some of them are blind so they could not see what was ahead of them. Some of our sand traps were in bad shape as our golf course crew just did not have the time to drain and repair them so this made it difficult. Our course had been closed for several days the past week because of the flooding it made several holes unplayable.

We were able to finish our 18 holes but to me it was very slow going, since they were unfamiliar with our golf course. They were very set in getting in a golf score even with these bad conditions. I explain to them since some sand traps were in bad shape they could lay out, but they chose to try to hit it out anyway with bad results. This caused some grumbling but they had to understand this in January and with flooding conditions our course could not be in championship conditions.

I do not intend to join this group this year as it means traveling a great distance to get to whichever golf course would be having an event. I have done all that in the past and did not want to do that anymore. Golfers who are very competitive can be very intimidating and I choose not to be involved. Been there, done that and am happy just playing on this beautiful Mill Creek Golf Course
