After three days of tournament play rookies were leading the Buick PGA Invitational held at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California. Even going into today the final round guess what Tiger comes from behind as the rookies found trouble.
Rookies such as Brandt Snedeker and Andrew Buckle knew they would have to conquer their nerves in the final group if they want to win for the first time. These events are always fun to watch as these two rookie golfers held up very well up until the final nine holes. At one time today Buckle was two shots ahead at 15 under until he found trouble and errant shots. Snedeker had the same problem as he was playing so well until some of his drives went array.
One does feel sorry for them as the pressure of hearing all the cheers as Tiger Woods was making a move on them. The rookie’s round on Saturday was amazing as they dropped 15 foot putt for birdie and made amazing putts for eagle. Snedeker’s first round of 61, 70, 74, put him in a tie with Andrew Buckle after play on Saturday and they realized they would not be playing in the final round with Tiger.
The play today looked like there would be a struggle of the two top rookies winning this tournament as their first nine holes produced great shots. Once they started on the back nine and Tiger made some excellent shots to get him to 14 under. The wheels came off as their tee shots started to spray around the course into unusual places. The one golfer who held his own was Charles Howell III who was playing with Tiger.
Howell and Tiger are good friends and play a lot of golf together plus are friends off the course. Howell made a good effort to catch Tiger but on the 17 hole he dropped his approach shot two feet from the pin for a birdie. Howell made a comeback on the 18th hole as his tee shot found the fairway while Tiger was in the fairway sand trap. Howell put his ball on the green as Tiger could not reach the green so laid up short. His approach to the green ended up next to the fringe grass. He chipped up short and waited for Howell to putt. If Charles could have made that putt they could have been tied but his putt went long. Tiger holed his putt to win this Tournament for the third time and winning seven in a row. Tiger is a terrific player to watch, he goes about his game to perfection, if one shot goes astray he can recover and stay in focus.
