Espionage, Terrorism and WikiLeaks

Although I have personally been disturbed by the WikiLeaks atrocity, apparently not everyone feels the same. There are some who believe that the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, a Canadian, should be found charged with espionage. Additionally, some believe that he should be labeled a terrorist.

Yet Robert Gibbs, White House Press Secretary, was quoted in an interview with Fox News of saying that Assange was nothing more than “one guy with one keyboard and a laptop.” In addition, the Obama administration is not scared of him. Really?

I’m sorry but I tend to believe that this is much more serious than ole’ Gibbs is making it out to be. Leaking classified documents is not something to be scared of? I guess this explains why President Obama has remained silent on the issue which to be honest, concerns me.

While Gibbs believes that we are a stronger country than Mr. Assange, the fact remains that all it takes is one person to cause a lot of destruction. I think not enough credit is being given to this. Granted, we don’t want Assange to feel that he somehow has the upper hand over us, yet at the same time do we really just dismiss what he has done?

Gibbs went on to say that “those people are criminals and they’ll be punished as such.” Oh really? And who is going to prosecute him? How exactly will he be punished?

Then on the other side you have Hillary Clinton who cited this as being an attack on the international community. There are many lawmakers who want to see this guy dealt with once-and-for-all…before even more secrets are spilled.

There seems to be some discrepancies in our government about how a case of leaked intelligence should be handled.

I personally believe that espionage charges should be pursued. I also believe that Assange can be labeled a terrorist. Isn’t terrorism a threat against our nation? Do we not think that leaking highly classified information could be a serious threat?

I am very disappointed that President Obama has not addressed this issue. I think it makes us look weak when our commander-in-chief remains silent on thousands and thousands of confidential documents being leaked.
