The movie starts in 1952 in a house that will be the focal point of every era in the movie, each twenty two years apart.
Demi Moore plays the role of a widowed nurse who finds herself pregnant with her brother in laws baby. She struggles with trying to find someone who will perform an abortion in a time where it was illegal. She even resorts to making an attempt on her own. In my opinion she plays the most riveting role of the three stories and keeps you the most emotionally invested.
The next period in the house is represented in 1974. Sissy Spacek plays the role of a married mother of four kids, one of whom is about to go off to college. With abortion legal in 1974, Spacek’s oldest daughter in the film, played by Hedy Burress encourages her mother to have an abortion. She struggles with the tug of war over starting over later in life or terminating her pregnancy.
The third story told in the house takes place in 1996. A college student played by Anne Heche becomes pregnant by her married professor who gives her money for an abortion and leaves her. Jada Pinkett plays her roommate and best friend and does not support her decision to abort. Pinkett plays a forceful and coercive character in her objections of Heche’s decision, leaving a rift between them that begins an emotional unraveling in Heche.
At the abortion clinic, protesters meet her. Rattled and unsure of her decision she leaves the clinic without going through with the termination. Pinkett reconsiders and with her support, Heche returns to the clinic the next day, to a clinic now overwhelmed by protesters and police. She enters the clinic and is put in the care of an abortion doctor played by Cher.
It is a great movie from beginning to end and a must see regardless of your views on abortion. You never know, it just might make you rethink yours.
