In the U.S., Labor Day (the first Monday in September) celebrates all working men and women who have contributed to wealth and well-being of this great nation. Americans celebrate the day with picnics, barbecues and parades. It's a time to relax with family and friends.

Labor Day also signals the official end of summer and time for back-to-school.

Our Working Person's Feast is a simple meal to make. After all, who wants to work hard on a meal on a day that is meant for relaxing? Each of these dishes take less than 1 hour to prepare and cook. The brownies can be made a day or two ahead of time and the steaks need to marinate overnight.

Since this is a casual meal, the ambience should be casual as well. Decorations should be simple. Try placing U.S. flags in clay flowerpots filled with jelly beans or peanuts. Cover tables with traditional checkered tablecloths. Fill wheelbarrows with ice for canned drinks and beer and place them in accessible spots for guests to grab their own.

Just For Fun

Composition Notebooks
Send your kids back to school in style with custom notebooks ideal for doodling during class.

Pig Apple
There are those of us who have a passing fondness for apples, and then there are those of us who simply go hog-wild over them--especially when they're disguised as peewee porkers.

First Day Jitters
Every child who has moved to a new school or is simply reluctant to start the school year can identify with this wittily drawn and suspensefully told story. From the moment she awakens on the fateful day to the moment she steps into the classroom, Sarah Hartwell imagines the worst. Love's ink-and-watercolor illustrations add humor to Sarah's fears, which range from bratty kids to a police search when she doesn't show up.

I Don't Want to Go Back To School

Ages 4-7. With humor and sympathy, this picture book dramatizes a child's panic about going back to school after summer vacation. What if the bus driver misses Ben's stop on the way home? What if no one remembers Ben at school? What if the teacher asks him a really hard question, and he doesn't know the answer? All Ben's fears are intensified by his big sister, Hannah, who tells him disaster stories about what could happen.
