Sometimes I Work In... Series
The series of books that he refers to is "Sometimes I Work In..." He says "The
twist is that each city (New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale etc...) is a different book. That way the parent can bring something specific to the destination home (beats a t-shirt!)."
A Well Thought Out Concept
Daly has brought some well credentialled colleagues on board for the book project. The illustrator is Stefan Kjartansson, who was Executive Creative director at CNN.com. Sherryl Goodman is a professor of Psychology at Emory University. She has made sure these books "entertain and inform while also helping reduce any anxiety children (or parents) may feel when business takes them away from home."
Help Your Children Understand Your Absence
While there are picture books avaialble on separation as in parents splitting up, separation because a parent is away on business is not well covered by children's picture books. I believe Tom Daly has found a niche market with business travelers.
Helping the child understand where you are, the type of things you do, and the special things to see in the area, gives a sense of connection and goes a long way to reducing anxiety. Anxiety often comes with uncertainty. When the child has more of an understanding of why you have to be away and where you are, it makes it a little easier for all concerned.
Sharing the Books With Your Children
Wrapping this concept up in a book format is a great idea. Books are often coupled with the comforting and predictable bedtime ritual, or a sharing time through the day. In any case, sharing a book is a positive association. The books could be shared in this way before you go and while you are away. They are also great catalysts for discussions and children's questions.
If you're in one of the cities already covered in the series, it would also make a good gift for when you come home, to share where you have been. As an added touch, each book includes a postcard to send home or for your child to send to someone.
