Bill Cosby and Education

Bill Cosby is more than a husband, father, pudding salesman, author, and a funny man. He is a man with an education; both from the streets as well as the books. Mr. Cosby cares enough about others to preach the word of education and mean what he says. When he talks, people listen; as the man is a powerful speaker.

He was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and dropped out of school and joined the Navy. He later went on to graduate from high school through a correspondence course. Later on, he went on to earn a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts.

If you remember back on “The Cosby Show”, he told his children they were going to go to college and get an education. There were many episodes that revolved around the college theme. As people watched his program; the idea and importance of education was shown to them, but not shoved down their throats.

The one thing that stood out was that Cliff and Claire Huxtable never told their children what to be. They explained the importance of an education and how it would enable them to stand on their own two feet, and out of the house. The children were free to choose to get an education in the career that appealed to them.

“The Cosby Show” showed that two educated professional people could also be good parents. They had problems with the children as most people have at times, but there was nothing that couldn’t be handled by a family that stuck together.

The show featured tours with music legends and was famous for integrating music in many of its’ shows. Lena Horne, Sammy Davis, Jr., B.B. King, and Melba Moore among others made appearances on the show.

Remember when the kids got into a car wreck with none other than Stevie Wonder? The family ended up getting to go to a recording studio and sing with Stevie. Wouldn’t that be something to remember?

There were times we visited Cliff Huxtable in his office showing the doctor role he played. We even went along with Clair Huxtable a few times to her law office. Perhaps this was not enough to encourage people to look at these possible occupations for career choices; but it didn’t hurt to get a glimpse into different worlds.

Dr William Henry Cosby, Jr. is someone who walks the walk and talks the talk. He turned his own life around and wants others to take advantage of all of the opportunities offered. Take a look at where this famous high school dropout has been and where he is finishing. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak.
