There is no pattern required. The neckline of most dresses for American Girl type dolls is approximately 10 inches around. You should measure the neckline of the dress with a measuring tape so you can go all the way around the neckline, after you sew the front and back together at the shoulders. Take the neckline measurement and multiply by 2. This is how long the fabric needs to be so that it will be ruffly. So, for American Girl type dolls make your fabric 20 inches long.
Now decide how high you want your collar to stand and multiply that number by 2, and add 1/2 inch for seams. So, for example, if you want your collar to be 1/2 inch high, as it is in the photo, double it to 1 inch. Add 1/2 inch for seams and your fabric needs to be 1 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches long.
Turn both short ends inside 1/4 inch and press it. Fold the fabric in half the long way, with the right side of the fabric on the outside, and press it. Using a long basting stitch, hand baste the collar closed, 1/4 inch in from the long, open side of the fabric, through both layers. Now pull the thread to gather the fabric until the collar measures 10 inches long, or the length of the dress neckline, and knot the thread so it doesn't pull out.
Pin the collar to the dress with the front of the collar against the right side of the dress. Look at the picture to the right to see how it should look. Stitch the collar to the dress on the basting line.
To make a nicely finished inside of the neck, cut a piece of single fold seam binding 10 1/2 inches long. Fold the 2 cut ends under 1/4 inch and press. Then pin and sew a long side of the seam binding to the inside of the collar with edges matching and right sides facing each other. Fold down the seam binding, on the crease and blind stitch the seam binding to the inside of the dress, along the second crease.
