My husband and I have just moved and, for the first time, I have a room all to myself; for my sewing, designing and writing. It is wonderful, but the task of organizing it is daunting. I am thrilled to finally have a "room of my own" but it is now painfully obvious that I need more than one room! So organization has become a very big priority for me.
In my attempt to bring some order to my collections I have found a great product that I wanted to tell you about. I invested in a set of storage shelves by Sterilite. The set that I ordered has five shelves and was extremely easy to put together. Assembly required only a hammer to tap the pieces together and was complete in about ten minutes! If you are stronger than I am you won't need the hammer, but, if you do I recommend that you use a cloth between the hammer and the shelves so you don't mark the shelves. But don't worry, these shelves are very sturdy, more than you would think for the price, since they only cost me about $33. I did a lot of research on this product before buying and that was about half the price of anything else this size that I found.
The unit is wide enough that I can fit a row of books on each side, and I have some really big books. I stood the shelves with a narrow end against the wall so not only can I use both sides, but it also works to divide the room into different work areas. The shelves are so high that I have to stand on a stool to reach the top, so there is plenty of storage space, and the shelves are wide enough apart that my large plastic storage bins fit.
Which brings me to the next product that I just love. I bought some large, plastic bins, with lids, to store my fabric stash in. The sides are clear so I can see what is inside of each one without having to open it, a big time saver. And since each one has its own lid, it keeps my fabric clean and dust free.
If you are buried under a lot of crafting supplies, or just want a little more organization in your studio, I highly recommend organization products from Sterilite.
