While we sit in the comfort of our homes and watch news coverage of budget quarrels and disagreements, another part of this world is experiencing tragedy that we cannot even begin to imagine.
Libya is in a state of disarray and some are wondering when and if President Obama plans to do more than give “strong” words to dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi to step down.
We have been hearing a lot of talk about implementing a no-fly zone, however as of yet nothing has been done. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has reportedly said that this can’t be something that is led by the United States solely. We need the support of other nations.
There has also been talk that defense secretary Robert Gates is against the idea of a no-fly zone. Instead they are apparently preparing for military options, which might include a no-fly zone.
Meanwhile some humanitarian effort has been provided, which is all well and good. However can we really allow this devastation in Libya to continue on? Can we sit back and watch Qaddafi murder his own people?
Granted, no matter what route we take there is going to be ramifications that may be difficult to accept. But this is the price for stopping brutality.
Meanwhile Qaddafi’s forces have continued to bombard the people and possess a number of territories. Using machine guns and tanks, they have also been striking anything that moves, including civilian cars and ambulances.
Here in the West we sit on our hands and wonder what should be done. Some believe that President Obama has been slow moving in coming up with a plan. There is definitely a fine line to be drawn here. What price are we willing to pay in order to help Libya?
France and Britain are encouraging a no-fly zone to be created but it’s not likely we will get the same support from China and Russia. Qaddafi has sent out his warning that if an attempt is made to impose a no-fly zone, he would fight back. I have no doubt that he means this. He also stated that it would only solidify his belief that the United States wants to seize their oil.
Qaddafi has also said that we are looking at a huge disaster should Al Qaeda overtake Libya. He indicated that the entire region, including Israel would be dragged into chaos.
I think no matter how you look at it; no matter how you believe we should or shouldn’t intervene…we are looking at a real mess. This is not going to end anytime soon. There isn’t really going to be a good ending to this situation. But can our President continue to sit by and do nothing?
