Refine Edge Feature
Once you have a selection perfected, you can use the new Refine Edge feature which is a dialog box with slider controls for refining the edge of your selection such as Contract/Expand, Feather and Smooth. You can also use this dialog box to preview your selection against different backgrounds. How many times have you created a selection only to find that it has a halo around the edge when placed against a dark background. With this new preview feature you can test you selection against different backgrounds including the standard "marching ants", white and black. It also shows the selection as a Quick Mask and previews the mask created by the selection.
Smart Filters
I often use filters to create special effects in my digital art. For example, a gradient can be used to create the light emitted from an ancient wall sconce. However, when I am trying to create a certain effect, I will need to test several filters to find just the right filter or combination. Before this upgrade, I would need to use the History Panel to undo one filter before testing the next one. Now, this is no longer such a chore. Smart Filters work in the Layers Palette much like an adjustment layer and they remain live or re-editable. Therefore, you can experiment with one or a combination of filters without the need to constantly undo your previous steps. How? First, the layer becomes a Smart Object and each filter applied to the layer is listed separately. You can rearrange the order of this list to create different composites and you can edit the filter settings to refine the affect you are creating. To give you even more flexibility, each Smart Filter has its own blending options which can be edited.
Vanishing Point and Perspective Art
The Vanishing Point feature is great when creating perspective in your artwork and this feature has been improved to allow for more flexibility in your design. Most importantly, you are no longer limited to 90 degree angles. You can use the Vanishing Point feature to warp graphics, text and images in perspective onto a previously drawn shape to create a realistic looking product image for both print and web marketing projects.
