UNESCO in Spain

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee
was set up to ensure that future generations will inherit the treasures of the past. The main aim is Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture (1999) to protect cultural and natural moments throughout the world.

After World War I, the idea to protect our natural and cultural heritage world-wide was born. But it took many years for an international agreement to be reached - The Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972.

It’s with thanks to this organisation that so much of our history and natural world is still around for us to enjoy today.

Spain has a huge legacy worthy of protection, here is a list of Spain’s World Heritage Sites.
