Best and Worst Soap Dads

Some dads are good guys. Some dads are bad guys. No matter what kind of dad you have, he is your dad and you love him, right? The same principle applies on soaps. In the past, we have been privy to some great soap dads doing some not so great things. Father’s Day is coming soon and the following is a tribute to the best and worst fathers on ABC Soaps.

All My Children:

Greatest Dad - Jackson Montgomer - In the early years, Jack stepped in to take care of his niece Bianca after his brother Travis left Erica and Bianca behind. Jack then played father figure to Lily, the autistic daughter of an ex, Laurel. While married to Erica Kane, Jackson stepped up once again and adopted Reggie, the local troubled teen. Finally, an old flame, Mary Smythe showed up in Pine Valley with her daughter, Greenlee. After a few games of hit or miss, it was discovered that Jackson was Greenlee’s biological father. Jackson welcomed Greenlee with open arms and the two eventually formed a loving father daughter bond.

Needs Improvement - J.R. Chandler - J.R. loves his son, Little A. No one can dispute that. His methods, however, are questionable.

Worst Dad - David Hayward - David does what he wants, when he wants. This evil doctor has proved that he is willing to throw anybody under the bus to get what he wants, and what he thinks he deserves. Even his own children!

One Life to Live:

Greatest Dad - Bo Buchanan - Bo is one of those dads you can talk to. He listens. He gives advice. It also helps that he is the police captain! Bo was lead to believe that his son, Matthew, was actually fathered by another man. The truth finally came out and Bo has been a stand up dad ever since. After Rex Balsam blew into town, Bo took him under his wing and still acts as father figure to Rex today. Just recently Bo discovered that he himself is the biological father of David Vickers! This father and son relationship has yet to be explored, but with Tuc Watkins returning this summer, anything is possible.

Needs Improvement – Rex Balsam - Rex is a little rough around the edges and grew up with no father figure in his life. One thing is clear, he loves his son Shane, and that has to count for something.

Worst Dad – Todd Manning - Todd tried to steal his own teen daughter’s baby so he could run off and raise it with a woman that he had raped years ago who was suffering from amnesia. Need I say more?

General Hospital:

Greatest Dad – Dr. Patrick Drake - Remember the days when Robin would mention the words “marriage” or “baby” and Patrick would hide under the nearest rock? Those days are obviously over. After Robin suffered a serious bout of post partum depression, Patrick manned up and took care of their little girl, Emma. Patrick did have a little help from little brother Matt, who will probably make a great father himself!

Needs Improvement – Sonny Corinthos - Sonny is the (very fertile) local mob boss and his “job” often interferes with his parenting skills. Although his intentions are good when it comes to his kids, Sonny always seems to put them in harm’s way. Sonny’s son Michael just came out of a coma from a bullet that was meant for Sonny himself.

Worst Dad – Luke Spencer - Luke is one of the most beloved characters on daytime. The only person that does not seem to fall for the Luke Spencer charm is his own son, Lucky. Lucky wastes no time pointing out that Luke was an absentee, alcoholic father. Luke’s daughter Lulu seems to have accepted Luke the way he is. Alas! Now we have Ethan, long lost son of Holly and Luke, who just came to Port Charles as part of scheme. If Luke really is the father, then Ethan is a chip off the old block!
