Decorating a Log Cabin or Lodge

Log Cabins and lodges have a lot in common as far as decorating styles go. A lodge is generally more often associated with hunting and mountains, whereas a log cabin can be in a prairie or other woodland zone, and can be associated with pioneers or even the gold rush.

Log Cabin Furniture

Log cabin furniture should, of course, be made of wood. Ideally, the colors and grains of the wood in the furniture should be similar to the colors and grain patterns in the walls. A real log cabin would be built by the owner, of wood that came from the property, and the biggest variance would be in the width of the logs. Beds should be covered in quilts.

Bringing Warmth to Log Cabins and Lodges

A log cabin generally has a pot bellied stove. Today, these can be electric, gas powered, wood fired, or pellet stoves. Wood burning stoves are traditional, but you don’t want to depend on burning your forest away in order to keep your home warm. Lodges generally have a great room with a big stone fireplace and a wide hearth. Since they’re associated with hunting, there may be a large elk head hanging over the fireplace.

Brightening up a Log Cabin or Lodge

Because log cabins and lodges have wood on the walls, they can seem dark and dreary, especially during the winter when there’s no greenery outside, or nothing but snow-covered pine trees. A deep shade of berry red can be incorporated into your lodge or cabin decorating to brighten things up a bit. Fresh and dried flowers and fresh fruit are also cheerful additions.

Special Cabin Decorating Ideas

Since log cabins are associated with pioneer days, vintage calico fabrics and gingham can be used to decorate in keeping with the log cabin fashion. Woodworking tools and antique kitchen accessories are also popular, like flour sacks and hand operated kitchen tools, from the days before homes had electricity. Rugs in a log cabin should be braided wool or made from rags, in the traditional pioneer fashion.

Special Lodge Decorating Ideas

Since lodges are associated with hunting, you can hang just about any hunting gun or stuffed animal head on the wall for authenticity. Furniture should be leather and rugs made of bear skin. An antler chandelier
would be a great lodge decorating accessory.
