Taking good care of your hair is important for many reasons. Clean hair follicles lie flat on the head and protect the scalp from the elements. Healthy hair also protects the head from bacteria, dandruff and infestations such as head lice. Poor care of the hair can lead to hair loss, itching and tearing of the scalp and, therefore, an entry for a myriad of infections.
Natural oils in the hair are necessary to keep the head moisturized. Brushing the hair regularly to distribute those oils is the first step to maintain a healthy scalp. Hair brushing also prevents tangles and damage to the hair as a result of tearing. It is an excellent way to identify a problem on the head before it turns infectious.
Adaptive hairbrushes include one that has a long angled handle with a round brush for those who have difficulty brushing due to limited movement of the arms. Another is a D-shaped brush with a Velcro handle to help with limited grasp. Brushes and combs with thicker, rubberized handles are also available.
Washing the hair should be a regular part of grooming. The hair does not need to be washed daily. The important oils that keep the hair and head healthy need to be allowed to replenish. But left unwashed for too long, the hair will become greasy, it will smell bad and it will not lie properly on the head to protect the scalp.
Washing can be much more of a challenge to the disabled, so there are many very good products on the market to help. Try a no-rinse shampoo or a no-rinse shampoo cap. Heat the cap in the microwave, apply, massage and dry. Both shampoos are alcohol free and leave the hair clean without water. Dry shampoos, either powder or foam are available that can be sprayed on and brushed into the hair. Hair deodorizers are sold to spray on the head and keep it fresh smelling. There are a number of trays, plastic and inflatable, that can be used at the sink for wheelchair users or in the bed for the bedridden.
Donít forget the haircut. A regular haircut keeps the hair healthy and it feels good. Look for a salon that is accessible or a beautician who doesnít mind traveling to your home.
Everyone deserves to look and feel his or her best. Hair care is a simple and inexpensive way to start a good day. It is also one more aspect of health that can be easily managed with the correct equipment.
