Warm and Cool Colors - Three-color combinations

Three-color combinations – mixed warm and cool

Working with three different colors can be an exhilarating experience. In the following list you will find intriguing color combinations, some of which you will already have tried, while others may be unknown to you.

When we combine colors from both sides on the color wheel we get a mix of warm and cool colors.

1. yellow, blue violet, red violet

2. yellow green, violet, red

3. green red violet orange red

4. blue green red orange

5. blue orange red yellow orange

6. blue violet orange yellow

7. Violet, yellow orange yellow green

8. red violet, yellow green

9. red yellow green, blue green

10. orange red green blue

11. orange blue green blue violet

12. yellow orange blue violet


Notice that each color has three sets of combinations. That gives a total of 36 color options. It is easy to see that combined with different distribution of these colors in the rug; the variation in rug patterns becomes virtually endless.

For example for violet:
2. yellow green violet red
7. Violet yellow orange yellow green
12. yellow orange blue violet


For those trying to get a grasp on the color wheel, here are some ways to draw the colors so the three groups can be easily distinguished.

Draw a line from yellow to red and blue - These are the primary colors
Draw a line from violet to orange and green - These are the secondary colors
Draw a large oval to connect the remaining colors. These are the tertiary colors

Another way to draw the color wheel is in rings.
1. The inner ring consists of the primary colors: yellow, red and blue

2. The next ring consists of secondary colors: orange, green, and violet

3. The outer ring consists of tertiary colors, which are combinations of the colors in ring 1 and 2.

When making a choice of three colors for a rug, remember also to take into account the colors of the room. .

In fact, analyze the room to see what color scheme has been used and then build on that to perhaps fill in a gap or add an accent by giving the rug a harmonizing color arrangement.
