2007 Emmy Nominations Include “Heroes” and “Battlestar Galactica”

For the record, let me state that I hate awards shows. Speaking as someone who covered them (from afar) for the media, I consider them to be one of the entertainment industry’s self-indulgent, egotistic, uninteresting idiocies. To me, they represent everything that’s wrong about Hollywood. Not to mention, they rarely get anything right.

The Primetime Emmys are no exception. The same folks get nominated over and over again in high-profile categories, despite slumps for their television shows; great shows get shunned year after year (“Deadwood,” for example, didn’t get any major nods this time although it shows up seven times for things like Outstanding Costumes and Outstanding Art Direction) and new shows aren’t much of a factor. The awards are always predictable (of course Discovery Channel’s “Planet Earth” got nods, and so did “CSI,” and so did “The Sopranos”). Nevertheless, I know some of you care about these silly awards, so I’ve put together a partial list, mostly of nominations that might be interesting to scifi fans (note that I’m only including categories where certain shows appear, and I’m not including all the nominees). “Battlestar Galactica” and “Heroes” are among the shows that received nods. Just don’t be disappointed on awards night, when all the statuettes go to people and shows you just didn’t think were that great.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, complete with all the pomp and circumstance necessary for such a made-up occasion, will air Sunday, September 16 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. I’ll be watching Disney Channel reruns instead.

By the way, I do have a lot of respect for many of the folks who work in the industry, including the usually unappreciated behind-the scenes tech people who get a well-deserved moment in the spotlight at the Emmys. For space and time considerations, I have had to exclude many of their names from this list (sorry!) but they are included at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy page, to which a link is included at the bottom of the page.
