Imitrex for Migraines

Imitrex is a popular choice among the many medications prescribed for migraine and headache pain relief. It not only treats the pain itself but the many symptoms that come with a migraine like light/sound sensitivity, nausea and vomiting. Imitrex is to be taken as soon as migraine symptoms begin; it is not used as a preventative medication. It is usually given in pill form but is available as an injection also.

Imitrex is also called Sumatriptan (generic name) and it belongs in the triptan family of medication types. It works at relieving migraine pain by its ability to stimulate seratonin receptors in the brain which cause the muscles surrounding the blood vessels in the brain to contract and narrow. It also reduces transmission of pain signals by nerves to the brain. It is considered extremely effective at relieving headache pain. The FDA approved sumatriptan in December 1992 and it is only available by prescription.

This medication should be taken as soon as migraine pain starts. You can take one pill with or without food. If the pain continues for two more hours, then you can take another dose. Do not take more than 200 milligrams within a 24 hour period. The side effects associated with Imitrex are dizziness, numbness, weakness and drowsiness. The rare side effects can include chest/neck tightening, fast/irregular heartbeat, left arm pain, fainting, vision changes, slurred speech, confusion, severe abdominal pain and bloody stools. If you experience any of these rare side effects after taking Imitrex seek medical attention immediately! This is not a complete list of side effects so please be sure to read the information sheet your pharmacy gives you with your prescription for more information. Also, when talking with your doctor about Imitrex it is very important your doctor is aware of all current medications you are taking. Imitrex can have increased side effects when taken in combination of certain other medications.

On a side note, this is what I currently am prescribed for my migraines and it does work well. I usually experience the dizziness and some nausea as a side effect but it does get rid of the migraine pain so it does bring me great relief. On occasion I have had to take the second dose after two hours but usually works in the first dose. I keep a headache and migraine journal for my doctor which helps greatly in assisting her with my diagnosis and needs. Imitrex has become much more affordable since it has become available in generic form, talk to your doctor about your migraines and be sure to ask about Imitrex.
